Poker is a game that has a lingo of its own. Many people find it very confusing especially those who are new to the game. This language should have particular meaning outside of poker, but when it is use in the game it has different meanings.

This language should have particular meaning outside of poker, but when it is used in the game it has different meanings. In order for us to know these meanings, below is a list of words and phrases frequently used in poker games. They are given meanings as they are used in poker. You don't want to play poker (online or offline) without knowing the meaning of these words, you'll just end up scratching your head. This will also help you have a smooth running and healthy game, and you won't get tricked by other players.

Blind (could be small or big blind) – a forced bet that replaces the antes in conventional poker. These are bets placed by the player on the left of the dealer. The first player places the small blinds and the second the big blinds and they are place before you can check your cards.

Board cards – these are cards exposed on the table. It is visible and shared by other players. It is dealt from flop on.

Draw – a person draws when he is trying to advance the card on his hand with the board card that still needed to be place in the table. It means that you have a specific card that you want to see on the table to improve your cards on hand.

Pre-flop – the turn in which your hand is being dealt. You will receive two cards that can only be seen by you and so does the other players.

The flop – the round in which the first three board cards are placed on the table.

The turn – comes after the flop and the time the fourth card is revealed.

The river – the fifth board card will be revealed in the table. So now you have seven cards in access (two in your hand and five in the table).

Limit poker – the game in which there are pre-settled limits for the bets in the game. Such as, if the bets are $10 – $20, the raises and bets on the pre flop and flop will $10, and then on the turn and river it will be $10.

Shorthand poker – is a game with less than 6 people playing at the table.

Longhand poker – is a game with more than 7 people playing at the table.

The outs – these are the cards you need in order to make a hit or a combination. For example, if you have a king and any card of spades, in order to calculate your outs you should consider that there are four kings and twelve spades. You must also consider the cards that are in the table. Now, if you have any cards of spades and a king of spades, and the flop revealed two spades and king of hearts. You will need one of the 8 spades in the deck and two of the king cards that are left. So if you add 8 and 2, you'll get 10 outs.

Position – these are the players' position in the poker table. These are counted by order of bet placing, which means from the dealer and clockwise. The last to place the bet is the dealer; the first one is the small blind and then the big blind, which is also referred to as early positions. The players who place their bets last are sitting in late positions.
